Paola Hivelin est une artiste plasticienne, curatrice et productrice française née à Ajaccio (Corse) le 1er avril 1975. Elle crée, avec sa compagne Sophie Noël et Lina Prokofieff, le collectif artistique écoféministe Gang Of Witches, actif de 2016 à 2022. En 2019, elles s’installent à Ibiza dans un petit « palais paysan », le Coven, qui est, jusqu’en 2022, le théâtre de résidences artistiques organisées dans le cadre du projet Gang Of Witches.
En 2023, Paola Hivelin décide d’investir avec ses œuvres l’intérieur, l’extérieur et le jardin de la demeure, afin de la transformer en une expérience polymorphe, artistique et mystique. Ses deux principaux modes d’expression sont la sculpture et la peinture. Sa technique et son esthétique, à la fois précieuse et brute, la rapprochent de l’outsider art. Elle est autodidacte. Son travail, fortement imprégné de ses convictions écoféministes, s’articule autour des thèmes de la défense du vivant, de la condition féminine et de la nature de la réalité. Elle a par ailleurs une obsession pour les fétiches de protection, les yeux, les déesses. Sa vie et son travail sont indissociables de son trouble bipolaire ; elle produit des œuvres en lien étroit avec la psychanalyse, qui lui a « sauvé la vie », et cherche dans l’inconscient des réponses que le conscient ne détient pas.
Les œuvres de Paola Hivelin naissent d’une transe créative. Les états émotionnels intenses qu’elle traverse lors de ce processus s’inscrivent dans l’œuvre à venir : elle procède par accumulation et superpose des strates de création, qui sont autant d’émotions capturées dans la matière-même des œuvres. Une temporalité se déroule sous la surface, indispensable au résultat final. Elle effectue également un travail sur la lumière au moyen de matériaux réfléchissants, principalement des feuilles de divers métaux, et des miroirs. Ces associations rendent les œuvres vivantes, particulièrement changeantes, et leur confèrent un caractère mystérieux, magique. Ses œuvres singulières, qui naviguent entre figuratif et abstrait, invitent les spectateur.rice.s à entrer dans un univers archétypal et vibratoire.
Paola Hivelin is a French visual artist, curator and producer born in Ajaccio (Corsica) on April 1, 1975. Together with her partner Sophie Noël and Lina Prokofieff, she founded the ecofeminist art collective Gang Of Witches, active from 2016 to 2022. In 2019, they move to a finca* in Ibiza, the Coven, which until 2022 will be the setting for artistic residencies organized as part of the Gang Of Witches project.
In 2023, Paola Hivelin decided to take over the interior, exterior and garden of the mansion with her works, transforming it into a polymorphous, artistic and mystical experience. Her two main modes of expression are sculpture and painting. Her technique and aesthetic, both precious and raw, bring her closer to outsider art. She is self-taught. Her work, strongly imbued with her ecofeminist convictions, revolves around the themes of defending the living, the female condition and the nature of reality. She also has an obsession with protective fetishes, eyes and goddesses. Her life and work are inextricably linked to her bipolar disorder; she produces works closely linked to psychoanalysis, which « saved her life », and seeks answers in the unconscious that the conscious does not hold.
Paola Hivelin’s works are born of a creative trance. The intense emotional states she undergoes during this process are inscribed in the work to come: she proceeds by accumulating and superimposing strata of creation, which are as many emotions captured in the very matter of the works. A temporality unfolds beneath the surface, essential to the final result. She also works with light using reflective materials, mainly sheets of various metals, and mirrors. These associations bring the works to life, making them particularly changeable and giving them a mysterious, magical quality. Her singular works, which oscillate between figurative and abstract, invite viewers to enter an archetypal, vibratory universe.
